N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher honors employees KURE BEACH | The <a href=”http://www.starnewsonline.com/section/topic13″>N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher</a> recently honored two employees – Casey Radley and Ryan Tomb – for making the aquarium a better place to work and visit.Radley, the aquarium registrar, won the 2014 Sea Star Award for outstanding job performance. She started working at the aquarium in 2010 as an outreach instructor in the Education Department. She also served as a special activities instructor, working with summer campers and giving behind-the-scenes tours. She became the registrar in August 2012. As registrar, Radley coordinates field trips, group visits and special event registration.Tomb won the 2014 Customer Service Award for his positive attitude and impact on co-workers and visitors. He joined the aquarium team in 2013 as a security officer.<h3>Brigade Boys & Girls Club participants recognized</h3> WILMINGTON | Brigade Boys & Girls Club recently received regional honors by Buffalo Wild Wings ALL STARS for the 2014 flag football season. Club member Tyquan Williamson, a sixth-grade student at Williston Middle School, was honored as the Southeast Regional Athlete of the Year. Tyquan was nominated based on his good attitude, humble spirit, athletic ability and respect for others. He also scored a touchdown in each game of the season, and helped lead his team to be runner-up in the Super Bowl, where he scored two touchdowns. Vernaye Taggart was honored as the Southeast Regional Parent of the Year. Over the past three years, Taggart has played a very active role in the club. She has two children who attend the brigade and has volunteered with special events, assisted with homework, coached flag football, and assisted with the brigade’s cheerleading program. She also recruited the flag football coaches.The winners were nominated by Mike Capps, Brigade Boys & Girls Club athletic director, and represent the Southeast Region.<h3>McCrory announces appointment of Shipley</h3> WILMINGTON | The Office of Gov. Pat McCrory announced the appointment of Edward Shipley III of New Hanover County to the N.C. Capital Facilities Finance Agency board of directors.Shipley works for Smith Moore Leatherwood LLP, with a focus on commercial real estate transactions and real estate finance.The board provides the benefits of tax-exempt financing to private institutions of higher education in North Carolina. Plein Air event May 30-31

WILMINGTON | Artists return to the Burgwin Wright House and Gardens for a Plein Air event 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, May 30, and Saturday, May 31.

The second annual celebration of art invites the public to observe the artists as they work. A reception and art show 6-9 p.m. Saturday evening is also open to the public, and 30 percent of proceeds from the sale of artwork benefits the preservation of the Burgwin-Wright House and Gardens.

Aquarium offers outdoor activities

KURE BEACH | The N.C. Aquarium at Fort Fisher recently announced new outdoor activities for the summer.

Canoeing the Salt Marsh: 9 a.m. Saturdays, June 7 through June 28. The three-hour explorations of the Zeke’s Island Estuarine Research Reserve by canoe includes canoeing, crabbing, seining or birding. Participants should be able to swim and be capable of sustained physical exertion. Closed-toe shoes are appropriate. This activity is for ages 8 and older, and children aged 8-12 must be accompanied by two adults. The fee is $25 per participant. Aquarium admission is not included.

Salt Marsh and Crabbing: 8 a.m. Friday, June 27. The hands-on program introduces participants to the challenge of catching blue crabs. Lessons in crab biology and crabbing equipment prepare participants for an exciting expedition outdoors to catch – and release – crabs. All bait and equipment is provided. This activity is for ages 7 and older. The fee: is $19 for ages 13 and older; $17 for ages 7-12. Aquarium admission included.

Surf Fishing Workshop: 8 a.m. Tuesdays, June 3 through June 24. The three-hour workshop includes one hour of classroom discussion, followed by surf fishing on a nearby beach. All equipment and bait is provided, and the program takes place rain or shine. This activity is for ages 10 and older. The fee is $15 per participant. Aquarium admission is not included.

Summer grief meetings set

WILMINGTON | Lower Cape Fear Hospice & Life-CareCenter is offering free grief groups for the community.

Grief – An open-ended discussion: Noon-1:30 p.m. Thursdays, June 26, July 24, and Aug. 21, at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick. The drop-in sessions cover a variety of grief topics, methods of healing, coping and reminiscing. No reservations are required for drop-in groups.

Living with grief – Coping with the death of a spouse: 4-6 p.m. Mondays, June 30 through Aug. 4; at SECU Hospice House of Brunswick, 955 Mercy Lane SE, in Bolivia. The program is designed to provide grief education and support, enabling members to cope with and understand grief. Discussions include the phases of grief and the grieving process, along with other areas of concern for participants. WILMINGTON | The Wilmington Family YMCA holds its second annual community yard sale 8 a.m.-12 p.m. Saturday, May 31, at 2710 Market Street.

Items for sale include books, clothing, collectibles, electronics, exercise equipment, furniture, housewares, movies and more.

Proceeds benefit the YMCA’s Annual Giving campaign, which supports programs for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.
