The researchers documented the first of the three cannibalism cases on Dec. 11, 2012, at a depth of 40 feet (12 meters), on a rocky bottom off the Cíes Islands, which are part of the National Park of the Atlantic Islands of Galicia (NAPAIG). Dave Sigworth, spokesman for The Maritime Aquarium, said later Tuesday that Aquarium officials believe the traffic island where the light poles are located “is the city’s, and thus those lights are serviced by SNEW.”
John M. Hiscock, SNEW general manager, expressed doubt about the magnitude of burned-out street lamps as well as who bears responsibility for the lights at the front of The Maritime Aquarium.
“There are lights out here and there,” Hiscock said. “I believe (the Aquarium lights) are not SNEW lights — they’re sort of a whiter light. I assume they’re parks and rec(reation), or The Maritime Aquarium. No one has approached us formally, but it’s my understanding those are not our lights.”

“There was a recognition that there is significant cost savings that ultimately would result from the LED lights,” Sheehan said. “But the issue with that, again, is that there is a very, very significant upfront cost that would have to be borne in doing the transfer over. The initial estimate, I believe, was $1,500 a light.”
Sheehan said replacement of the lighting would require replacing not only the lamps, but also the wiring and fixtures. He said the city might wish, as an intermediate step, to replace individual street lamps with metal-halide lamps, which produce a brighter light but cost less money to install than LED fixtures.
Hiscock said SNEW would not object to installation of new lighting in SoNo. He noted that the city and SNEW worked together to incorporate LED lighting as part of the Cedar Street improvement project.

Mitch Tonks, who owns the seafood restaurant next door to the tourist attraction, recently made the headlines when he opened his doors to a group of disadvantaged children and fed them for free.
But the restaurant’s kindhearted ethos doesn’t stop there.
Back in April, Rockfish added a £1 voluntary donation to customers’ bills with all contributions going to the Aquarium.
Mr Tonks handed over the hefty cheque to the Aquarium earlier this month – with the money being used to support the charity in its aims to promote understanding of the sea through education, conservation and research.
Rockfish serves up a wide range of seafood, most of which is sustainably sourced and certified by the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC), with much coming straight from local fishermen.
Dr David Gibson, managing director at the National Marine Aquarium, said: “We were thrilled when the restaurant chose to support the Aquarium earlier this year with this scheme, and to now receive a donation of £11,000 is truly brilliant.
“We share many of Rockfish’s values when it comes to helping preserve the marine environment, sourcing only the best sustainable seafood and keep fish stocks at healthy levels, so it is fantastic that the customer donations will be used to support our marine conservation projects to help us achieve our aims.”
Mr Tonks added: “We’re already big supporters of the Fishermen’s Mission charity and the work they do but wanted to work closely with a charity in Plymouth, and we love the work that the National Marine Aquarium is doing.
“With its focus on sustainability and conservation it seemed to be the perfect fit.
“The £1 is optional for diners and we can’t believe how generous our guests have been about this so it is thanks to them that we can make this donation”.

A FAMILY has been left distraught after a thief broke into their garden to steal more than £1,000 worth of koi carp.
Kathryn Aynsley believes the offender crawled under a fence panel in the middle of the night to get to the ornamental pond.
The 26-year-old mum, of Talke, thinks they are deliberately being targeted after a similar break-in at their Swan Close home three months ago although on that occasion nothing was taken.
Among the prize fish pinched in the latest incident was a 10-year-old changoi koi which is worth £1,000 on its own.
Kathryn, who lives with her parents, said: “My parents let the dog out at about 10pm and then sometime during the night whoever it was wedged the fence panel up and crawled underneath.
“A lot of the plants had been stood on and there was water all along the decking, it was drenched.
“It happened before three months ago but they didn’t manage to steal anything.”
The theft took place in the early hours of yesterday.
Two other fish were taken including a 15-year-old blonde ghost Koi and a large 20-year-old golden Orfe worth about £30.
Kathryn added: “My dad invested in the chagoi because it’s quite a rare colour.
“It was over 12 inches long and is quite friendly. He recognises people as a source of food. The blonde ghost Koi was not as expensive but because of how big he had got, it would have been a lot to sell on.
“We have had a pond since I was little. We started with a goldfish pond and then started to buy more expensive fish. We buy them little for about £20 to £50 and then the bigger they get the more expensive they are.”
The family have spent a lot of time and money making sure their fish are kept in the correct environment with a special filter system and UV lights.
They have already increased security in the hope of deterring thieves in the future.
Kathryn added: “There are about 10 fish in the pond but the thieves took the most valuable ones. They must have known what they were doing.
