What Had You Talking in 2014? Water park idea creates major buzz around Massillon

  • An excited  buzz circulated throughout the city and beyond early this year when a plan to build a multimillion dollar water park and aquarium on golf course land was proposed.

Never in recent history had so many people packed City Council meetings and other public gatherings, eager to learn more about the possibilities.

When, after several months, the water park plans dried up, the buzz eventually died down and left some folks wondering, would the idea emerge in another city?

One of the developers behind the plan said this month that an announcement for another Northeast Ohio location is coming soon.

    THE PROPOSAL

Hammond Aqualife LLC and the city announced the proposal in late February to construct an approximately $50 million aquarium and indoor water park in Massillon. The Legends of Massillon golf course was the site selected for the park. When May 1 came, the project was yanked with developers citing a slow moving process with city government.

A boon of tourism dollars for city businesses, a major hotel, road upgrades and quality of life were potential plusses discussed that could have come with the project.

“I think it could have been a good fit for the city and a big attraction to boost the economy,” said Councilwoman Michelle Del Rio-Keller, D-at large, in looking back. “Maybe we could have (acquired) another hotel to come here out of the deal.”

Mayor Kathy Catazaro-Perry called the idea a “home run” and said many city residents were in favor of having the attraction in Massillon.

A handful of well-attended public meetings about the water park proposal took place in March and April, as Rex Ferguson led a four-member group to generate interest about the project. Ferguson, a Stark County resident, was the group’s spokesman, while Fidel Magdelena Junco of Texas was identified as the partner with expertise in aquariums and water parks. The two met in the 1980s while they were students at Walsh University.

The duo was peppered with questions on financing and construction that never seemed to be satisfactorily answered. The developers later decided to move on from Massillon due to what Ferguson called a lengthy and “protracted” process involving city government.

Catazaro-Perry has no regrets on the weeks spent exploring the idea and noted the city was out no money for its interest.

“When something big comes along, you have to take a strong look to see if it’s viable,” the mayor said. “That’s exactly what we did.”

    UPPING THE ANTE

In April, the company veered off its original plan to lease 22 acres of the golf course by offering to purchase the entire facility. The golf course consists of about 275 acres at 2100 Augusta Drive SE. Ferguson said the company wanted to operate an 18-hole golf course and use the remaining property to develop the aquarium and water park.

Page 2 of 3 – The city’s excitement for the project began to dim when Hammond failed to provide the answers city officials sought concerning financing, and the company’s ability to deliver specific information on the project.

While excited about the possibilities, city residents were curious about the project. Hundreds filled the City Council chamber and Lillian Beane Center for public meetings. They queried about impact on city roads. Would the facility have a negative impact on property values? What would happen if the project failed?

Hammond offered answers, but those answers didn’t always sit well with elected officials and residents.

“The cart came before the horse,” recalled Del Rio-Keller. “We jumped on the idea, and the research came later. That’s when the whole issue started to go south.”

Del Rio-Keller added that supporting documents on specific financial and building plans never made it from the developers to City Council, which added to concerns about the project.

City residents living near The Legends had their own issues about additional traffic, safety and property values.

“When you questioned them on negativity, it was buried under the rug,” Del Rio-Keller said.

After the Massillon proposal was pulled, the company privately began shopping the project to other areas. Ferguson said recently that his group is close to announcing a new Northeast Ohio location for a water park, but was mum on details.

    NEXT UP FOR LEGENDS

The Legends is staying on par as a 27-hole golf course for at least 2015, even though the Massillon Parks and Recreation Board unanimously recommended reverting to the original 18-hole concept over the summer.

City Council nixed the notion for at least a year and wants to focus on a new management structure at the golf course. Luring a professional golf management company to The Legends is an option to consider that could help with cost savings and increasing business, Del Rio-Keller said.

The Parks and Recreation Department has talked to multiple management companies with interest about taking over full operation of the course, Del Rio-Keller said. But nothing has progressed beyond general discussion.

The city carries more than $5 million of debt on The Legends, and has mulled many options to reduce the deficit.

Council, the mayor and the Parks and Rec Board should work together to find a suitable solution, said Del Rio-Keller, adding that she prefers hiring a full-time manager next year.

“My feeling is we need to put a manager out there,” said the councilwoman. “We haven’t had a full-time manager since 2008.”

Advertising for the position and conducting interviews could come in early 2015, prior to the start of the golfing season, which is in March, Del Rio-Keller said.

Page 3 of 3 – Catazaro-Perry said any decision on future management of The Legends should be her call. However, City Council is the final authority on such matters.

“I can’t really say what’s next for the golf course,” the mayor said. “It’s not under my purview.”

Va. Beach pet store closing after 39 years

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) – The king of the jungle is hanging up his vines.

Bob Hames says 39 years of owning and running the massive and unusual pet store Animal Jungle is enough. In the next four to six weeks, he said, he’s closing his doors at Holland Road and South Plaza Trail.

“A, I’m tired,” Hames said. Then there’s the way the market has changed, with competition from big-box pet stores and Internet sites. Hames said his two children aren’t interested in taking over the store, and he doesn’t want to sell it.

“This is a lot to take care of,” he said. “I grew into a store this size over 39 years.”

Hames started Animal Jungle at Pembroke Mall in 1976 when he was 20 years old. He had been an aquarium hobbyist since he was 10.

From the start, the store’s primary focus was aquatics. Hames said he traveled to Florida more than a dozen times a year to buy fish directly from commercial farms. It got him good pricing and a selection few other stores could boast, he said.

Today, the store on Holland Road has 40 to 45 employees, 26,000 square feet of floor space, 35,000 gallons of aquarium water and big selections of reptiles, small animals and birds.

It also has a few “display” animals, including Flapjack the stingray, Cookie the hyacinth macaw and Mikeeto the serval, an African cat that was born and raised by a private breeder in North Carolina.

He plans to find places for all of them. A staff member is planning to take Flapjack, and a few longtime customers are interested in Cookie. The Virginia Zoo in Norfolk is interested in taking Mikeeto and, if that doesn’t work out, Hames said he might take her to a cat rescue in Florida. She can’t legally be sold in Virginia to anyone who doesn’t have a special permit.

“I’m not taking any animal to the SPCA,” he said. “We have a moral obligation to find homes for all of our animals.”

The store announced the closing Dec. 18 on Facebook and said all inventory is 35 percent off. Nearly 300 people had commented on the post by the next day, lamenting the store’s close and sharing memories.

Chuck Doud was one of them. He said he started bringing his children to Animal Jungle years ago when they were 1 and 2, back when he had little money for entertainment. They’d feed the koi fish and maybe hold a cockatiel, and eventually got their first hermit crabs and betta fish there.

“I’m just heartbroken,” Doud said over the phone. “It’s such a shame, too, that an independent store like that doesn’t seem to be able to survive anymore.”

Bob Claffy said that when he was 14 and the store was at Pembroke Mall, Hames let him clean hamster cages in exchange for fish and fish food. Today Claffy has 30 to 40 aquariums.

“That shop is not like a normal pet shop,” he said. “It’s iconic on the East Coast…. For the hobbyists in Hampton Roads, that store and those people will be sorely missed.”

Try overwintering water hyacinth in a heated aquarium

Q • Can you tell me how to overwinter a water hyacinth? I grew one for the first time this summer. I kept it in a bucket of water and just moved the bucket indoors this fall.

A • In warmer sections of the southeastern U.S., the water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is a noxious weed, notorious for clogging waterways. It’s not hardy in our local climate, but nonetheless is a difficult plant to overwinter and requires special care. It would prefer to spend the winter floating in shallow water in a tropical greenhouse, as it requires high light levels and warm water. If you can’t provide these conditions, try growing it in a heated aquarium equipped with a fluorescent light fixture. Place the aquarium in a bright, sunny room and leave the light on for 12 to 14 hours each day to supplement natural light.

These same conditions can be used to overwinter water lettuce (Pistia stratiotes), an equally exacting tropical floating aquatic plant popular with area water gardeners.

    Winter season Considerations for Koi

Goldfish as well as Koi hate wintertime greater than we do. Neither varieties of fish is indigenous to North America, so right here, they just ‘survive’ wintertime. They do not flourish in it. My name is Dr. Erik Johnson and I am a fish vet. My method lies in Georgia, which generally has pleasant winters months and also very little ice on the pools. Nonetheless, winter months’s results on the fish appear to be the same whether the pond is simply icy, or iced over. This write-up intends to inform you of some wintertime truths, however much more significantly, this post will seek to make use of those truths to guide you via a safe as well as healthy and balanced springtime.

    Winter season “Factoids”.

There are certain factors you need to recognize concerning “Winter months” so you can properly analyze specific events and conditions come Springtime.

    Important Factoid # 1.

During the winter months, the fishes’ body immune system is in a primarily non-functional condition.

    Vital Factoid # 2.

Moving water through a slim phase helps it in the gain or loss of warmth. This is an easy declaration with a great deal of significance. When you put a mug of very hot soup backward and forward from one cup to one more, you could quickly cool it for your child. So a waterfall could dissipate or grab heat from the pond’s water. In certain climates, such as in the Sierra Nevadas and various other desert areas, air temperatures can be hot by day and ice cold at night. This concerns since if your falls runs around the clock, you could be warming the water by day, and also extremely cooling it by evening. Once more, this is a topographical phenomenon and may not put on you. Nevertheless, a simple water thermometer could possibly inform you. Temperature swings within the pond over close to twenty degrees Fahrenheit are extremely demanding for the fish. Anxiety makes the fish much more susceptible to infection. Some individuals run their falls throughout the day to get important totally free heat, and also turn the diminishes (ensuring to have some other type of immersed pond blood circulation for aeration) at night to spare that totally free energy as well as stay clear of super air conditioning.

    Crucial Factoid # 3.

Turning off your waterfall might spare warmth loss during the night however can additionally rob fish of air and circulation, which may be very important. It is necessary if water temperature levels are reaching constantly have some flow in the pond to maintain enough aeration or oxygen exchange for the fish.

    Essential Factoid # 4.

Fish could not freeze into a block of ice as well as survive.

This is a winter factoid that should be ruined at last. I had an interesting encounter one winter season where I had many thirty-gallon fish tanks outside my house for examinations I was running. The storage tanks were occupied with Goldfish. They had 300Watt heaters in them. Well, in the dead of winter months, the heating units fell short considering that the power did. The containers closest to the edge of the patio area froze strong and damaged the tanks. The storage tank closest to the door likewise froze “strong” and also broke the storage tank. Nonetheless, in the last tank, the water in the facility of the “block” of ice remained unfrozen as well as the Goldfish in this pocket of ice water lived. Due to the temperature levels, the fish were still. Any person taking a look at them would have claimed they were iced up solid right into the block of ice. Nonetheless, they were not. I am a big person and I had the ability to raise the block as well as change the fish around, which is how I knew I needed to chip open the block and rescue the fish.

Lots of people see their fish in little ponds, iced up under a solid layer of ice. The fish are absolutely paralyzed as a result of the cold weather. They perceive that the fish are frozen in the ice therefore they state “My fish were iced up solid and lived!” however this is not the case.

    Essential Factoid # 5.

An additional typical myth in this pastime is that fish are more secure from bloodsuckers and also microorganisms like microbial infections in the dead of wintertime considering that these “pests” slow down or even stop in icy water. Nevertheless, the converse holds true.

Parasites do not necessarily slow down in ice cold water. In fact, specific varieties of Flukes are really MORE active in the icy water of winter months, and also types of both Ich, Trichodina and Costia will work well in icy water. So it’s an essential truth that the fish can be a lot more heavily parasitized in winter season than other time of the year.

With those important facts in your thoughts, you can now wisely plan for winter months, and then a successful Spring.

    Prep work for Winter.

To have a very successful springtime, you need to appropriately plan for winter. It is VERY important that the fallen leave fall from October be gotten rid of from the pool. You need to NOT leave Autumn’s leaves on the pool base to rot. This is maybe the most common reason for a winter season wellness failure by spring season.

Rotting leaves are not instantaneously unhealthful for the fish. Nevertheless, after an entire wintertime of decay, and with heating styles in the water for Spring season, illness prevails in pools with a layer of composting leaves under.

Remembering from the above that falls could function as supercooling factors for the pond. I recommend NOT running the falls throughout the coldest times of winter. This recommendation is intended to exempt the fish from coping with QUITE cold water. Nonetheless, turning off the waterfall induces brand-new difficulties in terms of prepping the filters for freezing. You must drain and also dry the pump, as well as drain as well as completely dry the purification which will not have water moving with it, or it may swell and also split.

Additionally, if you do NOT run the waterfall in winter, be aware that in the Springtime, you will certainly need some sort of water circulation to preserve aeration when the water starts to warm up. Some folks run their falls in the warmth of daytime, as well as transform them off at night. Others will resume the use of the falls in the really early Spring season and also monitor temperatures for extreme swings overnight.

When ice forms on the pool, you have an evaluation to make. Will the pond be iced up for greater than a couple days? You have an action item to attend to if it will be frozen for more than 2 Days.

In Georgia, we often don’t have ice on our pools for any kind of 2 Days duration. So we do not worry about de-icers or keeping a gap clear in the ice.

In environments where the pond will freeze and the ice will certainly be over the water for more than 2 Days, it’s a great idea to keep a gap clear in the ice. The very best means to do this would certainly be drifting electronic trough de-icers. There are pond de-icers, too, which have actually had the Cattle Water Trough Heating unit tag removed as well as changed with a ‘twice the rate’ pond de-icer tag.

Cattle trough de-icers are NOT reputable pond heating units, and will certainly add hardly any to the heat of the pool due to the fact that they just switch on at 35-40 degrees and also remove at 45 or so– merely remaining warm sufficient to keep some water available in the area of the ice. Keeping a gas-exchange portal in the ice externally of the wintertime pool is preferable, and also where pool ice over is a worry, I advise a livestocks trough de-icer.

You can additionally make any selection of pool hole-keepers with plastic boxes containing lightbulbs, as well as much more. There is a report that starting a conversation with a frank object like a hammer will damage the fish. I have not found this to be true. Often an individual enters a rush to go to work as well as does not have time to registered nurse an opening in the ice with a very hot kettle. When a guy gets in a rush and needs to damage a gap in the ice with a hammer or a brick there’s no damage done.

Utilizing an aerator (column of air anxiety) can keep a hole open in the ice if it’s thin, nevertheless, stalagmites of ice type over these tools in Canada in the winter months. An additional approach must be found.

    Assessing Wellness in Winter season.

In winter season, fish are quite inactive and most proprietors do not feed the fish much in wintertime. So, if the fish are not gathering together for meals, or schooling around the pool, how can you analyze their wellness?

Direct exam is essential. Spend the time regularly to look at the fish as they relax in the pool. Seek secured fins, inflammation in the skin or fins, puffy eyes or lips, or fraying, rotting fins. Seek a single fish that is not resting with the various other fish. Search for white slimy areas on the fish. Each one of these signs might show that the combo of winter’s tension, no food, and potentially an opportunistic parasite is working with the fish.

I have seen instances where folks place mirrors on the pool base. Through this, as the fish swim over the mirror, they could examine the tummies of the fish.

What can the pond owner do to minimize Winter months stress? (I recognize it’s a difficult time for them).

One means to minimize several of the tension of in wintertime is to use salt at a price of 3 pounds each one hundred United States gallons. Using aquarium or pond salt is suggested however some folks use non mineralized cattle salt, water conditioner salt, or stone salt. Do not use iodized salt. However if you do, it will not eliminate fish. Salt in certain quantities will get rid of some or each one of your plants. This is specifically true for plants which set you back much money. If you spent anywhere close to fifty bucks for a plant, or if it’s uncommon, it will certainly die all out in salted water.

ArtWall Michael Creese "Koi Fish And Water Lily" Gallery-Wrapped Canvas, 18 by 24-Inch

Michael Creese ‘Koi Fish and Water Lily’ gallery-wrapped canvas is a high-quality canvas print depicting a pair of koi fish swimming in a colorful pond with water lilies in the artist’s signature vibrant, oil impasto style. A beautiful addition to your home or office. Michael Creese was born in Chicago, Illinois and studied art at Carnegie Mellon University, where he received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. He paints in the oil impasto style, a technique used in art where paint is laid thickly on canvas, leaving visible brush (or palette knife) strokes. When dry, impasto provides a great deal of texture to the finished painting. He also works with several other mediums in addition to oils. “My particular style of painting is a culmination of my fine art training, my fondness for the Impressionist and Expressionist art movements and my personal artistic vision. Color and composition are two key elements to my creative process, but the application of paint is perhaps the single most important factor in defining my style, from loose brush strokes and rich texture to an almost frenzied use of palette knife marks. The colors that I use are frequently blended directly on the painting, adding liveliness through visibly distinct transitions in color and shade. I have been told that one of the nicest features of my style, even though it is representational, is its abstract quality. This is one aspect of painting that I truly enjoy and one that I have worked hard to preserve. But apart from all the explanations of technique or style, I think that you will find as I have that art is mostly a mystery so much more than the sum of its parts.”.

Winter's story continues: "Dolphin Tale 2"

     14 December 2014 | 7:37 PM

    “DOLPHIN TALE 2”

Blu-ray widescreen, DVD widescreen and Digital HD download, 2014, PG for mild thematic elements

Best extra: A series of short making-of features

RESCUE, REHAB AND RELEASE – that’s the mission of the Clearwater Marine Hospital/Aquarium in Florida. It’s good work – and so is the sequel to 2011’s “Dolphin Tale,” a true story about Winter, a rescued dolphin.

“Dolphin Tale 2” picks up Winter’s story a few years later. For newcomers, the bottlenose dolphin lost the flippers of her tail. Morgan Freeman plays Dr. Cameron McCarthy, a specialist who designs a prosthetic that allows the dolphin to swim and leap again. His gel-like sleeve creation that fits the flipper onto Winter is now used in fitting prosthetics more comfortably for humans.

Who would have guessed that animal rescue could have such a far-reaching benefit? The gel-sleeve has been of specific use to injured veterans.

McCarthy, Winter and other members of the Clearwater Marine Hospital/Aquarium have returned. Thanks to the spread of Winter’s story, the facility has grown; donations are up and people travel from around the world to see her. Now Winter is undergoing another crisis. Dolphins are social animals and need friends of their own species to thrive. “Dolphin Tale 2” shows what happens as staff and volunteers work together to find her a new companion after her aged friend dies. We also learn more about the “Rescue, Rehab, Release” program, like the one at our local Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center in Virginia Beach.

This is one gorgeous film. Brought to us by co-writer/director Charles Martin Smith, who also directed “Dolphin Tale,” camerawork was accomplished by Bob Talbot, an underwater/marine wildlife cinematographer, and Daryn Okada, director of photography. There are two beautiful “water ballets,” one where dolphins and humans swim together, another with Winter and with a baby dolphin, Hope, who is integral to the story. (Baby dolphin – yes – too adorable to believe!) “The trick here was to make sure the audience really got that the animal was an emotional character in the movie,” Okada says in “Underwater Magic,” one of four short featurettes that provide a “making-of” experience.

Warner’s high-def transfer provides a picture filled with light, brilliant color and sharp detail. Smith tells us they used much smaller, lighter cameras, enabling them to film quick turns underwater. The sense of motion is excellent. The eight-channel DTS-HD soundtrack is also good. Immersive qualities give a sense of being surrounded by water. Dialogue, ambient sound and score come through cleanly.

Each extra is only a few minutes long; the star is Winter’s continuing saga. We hear from Smith, who also appears in the movie, Freeman, and returning actors Harry Connick Jr., Nathan Gamble (Sawyer), Cozi Zuehlsdorff (Hazel), Ashely Judd and Kris Kristofferson. Bethany Hamilton (“Soul Surfer” 2011), the young champion surfer, who lost her arm in a shark attack, appears as herself in the film and in a bonus feature, “Bethany Hamilton Meets Winter.” Like Winter, Hamilton continues to be an inspiration to amputees everywhere. “Bethany is one of those people who just inspire. She makes people feel good; she makes people want to overcome their problems,” producer Richard Ingber says.

Producer Broderick Johnson agrees. “Teaming her and Winter is, hopefully, great for people who have physical challenges, and who enjoy seeing people overcome those things.”

Other extras include two music videos, “Cozi Zuehlsdorff – ‘Brave Souls’” and “Gavin DeGraw – ‘You Got Me,’” and a blooper reel.

The best thing about “Dolphin Tale 2” is knowing the story is real and ongoing. In “The Mission,” which also shows archival footage of various rescued animals, David Yates, executive producer and CEO of the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, emphasizes their job is to rescue and release injured marine life able to survive in the ocean after treatment. Because of its dynamic expansion, the aquarium/hospital has been able to nearly double the number of rescued animals, Yates says.

But it’s not an easy task. Staff and volunteers become attached to the animals they care for and it’s difficult to let them go – even heart-wrenching. But they do it, and humans and wildlife are the better for it.

With “Dolphin Tale 2,” we all get to keep the story and the mission going. This is a family movie to be enjoyed by all.

Ground broken for Texas State Aquarium expansion

CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) – Ground has been broken for the Texas State Aquarium’s largest expansion in the organization’s nearly 25-year history.

Ceremonies were held Wednesday in Corpus Christi for the $50 million project including a four-story wing called Caribbean Journey.

Aquarium officials in June announced plans for the 65,000-square-foot wing that will join the original Gulf of Mexico exhibit building. The Caribbean Journey will complete the final two phases of the aquarium’s master plan. Construction should be completed by early 2017.

Aquarium president Tom Schmid says the new wing means visitors will get to see more fish, sharks and other sea creatures. The complex will also include an education center.

Officials say more than 11 million visitors have been through the Texas State Aquarium since it opened in 1990.

    VIRGINIA BEACH

Aire the red-tailed hawk wasn’t cooperating.

She kept turning sideways Sunday morning, showing the camera where her right wing was amputated after a collision with a cellphone tower. Why wouldn’t she show her good side?

“I don’t speak red-tailed hawk well, so who knows?” said photographer Joel Sartore. After some coaxing, he got the shot.

    He always does.

Sartore, 52, a National Geographic photographer from Nebraska, has spent the past nine years photographing captive species around the world for a project he calls the Photo Ark. The collection is part preservation, part inspiration: If people see beautiful, up-close photographs of animals, Sartore reasons, they might fall in love. And if they do, they might try to keep them from extinction.

On Sunday, he was at the Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center, where he spoke to the public. While there, he asked if he could add a few of the aquarium’s animals to the ark, said Rachel Metz, director of live exhibits. On Sunday, he photographed mostly birds; today, he’ll tackle the fish.

“It’s exciting. He’s been all over the world photographing animals, and now here he is,” Metz said, “photographing ours.”

Handlers buzzed Sunday morning as Sartore set up a “light tent,” a cloth box that contains the creatures. He said bees are tough and wasps aren’t any fun, but birds are a close runner-up on his list of the toughest critters to photograph.

Gulliver the herring gull put up a fight. He became a local celebrity after dangling – and being rescued – from power lines near the Lesner Bridge. On Sunday, he scratched and stomped around the light tent.

“Ow, that’s my fingers,” his handler said as he took Gulliver away after the shoot. “That’s my wrist.”

A pretty red-headed moorhen behaved better, but Sonic the North African hedgehog ran in circles. A sand boa from Kenya just sat still, and a tiny yellow warbler, native to Virginia and missing one eye, preened for the camera.

“It’s easy when they just stand there, with their good eye toward you,” Sartore said.

His pictures show animals in startling detail against plain black or white backgrounds. That way, he says, an elephant appears the same size and has as much value as a sparrow.

Sartore said he has photographed about 4,250 species in more than 200 zoos and aquariums around the world. That puts him about a third of the way toward his goal of photographing all 12,000 species in captivity.

It’s a small percentage of the world’s total biodiversity – there are 6,000 species of frogs alone, he said – but there are advantages to sticking with captive animals. For one thing, they don’t have to be chased down in the wild. For another, Sartore can send a message that zoos and aquariums are doing important work – often they’re the only places some people will interact with animals.

“You can’t care about something if you’ve never met it,” he said.

In his presentation, Sartore urged people to think about what they buy and throw away.

Want to save a walrus? Put on a sweater, he said.

“Don’t burn carbon to keep your house warm,” he said. “You don’t have to be a biologist to save species.”

How Electric Eels Zap Their Prey

    Electric eel

(Photo : Wikipedia) Electric eels can send electricity through water in 1/50 of a second.

Electric eels (Electrophorus electricus) can deliver shocks that are similar in severity to tasers, said a new story.

These electric shocks can reach up to 600 volts, powerful enough to leave a horse writhing in pain. These electric shocks generated by eels are the most powerful from any marine animal.

    Like Us on Facebook

The shocks also cause animals to twitch and go into convulsions, thereby revealing their hiding places to hungry eel predators.

Using high speed cameras, researchers frm Vanderbilt University observed and examined eels in a large tank as the animal hunted prey such as koi fish. The cameras recorded at 1,000 frames per second and captured the attacks in high quality video.

Researchers noted how eels generated electrical charges, as well as the after effects of the electric shock that result in muscle spasms and convulsions.

The eels watch out for fish that swim past them and release high voltage shocks that travel through the water to stun prey. These shocks cause muscles of the fish to contract, paralyzing them and preventing them from swimming for safety. This is similar to how a taser works.

Researchers injected the koi fish with a drug that inhibited the communication links between muscles and the nerves of the fish to stop the contraction during the shocks. This demonstrated how electricity affects the motor neurons of the fish and is the first time this effect has been observed.

The eels’ strategy to catch its prey is to release two or three high voltage blasts that causes the fish to twitch. These electric shock attacks occurred in just one fiftieth of a second.

This is a remarkable example of evolution in action, according to Jason Gallant from Michigan State Universit,. The eel carefully plans its actions. It doesn’t unleash electric voltage into the water to kill all surrounding prey. Eels were about six inches away from the prey before the electric attack begins.

This study was published in the journal, Science.

Koi Cancer as well as How to Address Slow Healing Koi Wounds

“I have this fantastic fish with a large open injury on her. The injury has been there for a long period of time(a number of years) and also hasn’t actually triggered the fish any type of discomfort as far as I can mention to. Up until recently. The location is now contaminated as well as I think speading. I have consisted of a picture of the fish. Could you please establish me in the appropriate direction?”.

That has several of the appearance of a cancer cells. It is likewise feasible that it is a non recovery injury. Factors for non healing wounds include wounds that are kept open by bloodsuckers, high nitrate degrees, or unsuitable attention by other fish which might be cleaning the wound. Some injuries just remain open until you “irritate” and also refresh the cells (aka – debride) them.

Right here’s how that fish probably ought to be treated.

The fish needs to be caught and analyzed for various other sores, as well as look at the gills. Photodocument the fish with a digital electronic camera.

If you should calm the fish you would simply capture the fish and also put it into a huge bin with aerated water and also Oil of Cloves (4 drops each gallon) until it was “sluggish” adequate to manage and also photodocument.

The lesion should be rubbed (without tension). But it still acquires “scrubbed” making use of rugged BANDAGE or a VERY-soft tooth brush – cotton balls or paper towel are not rough adequate as well as will slick over with fish slime – you need something that would certainly take out practically Every One Of the loosened scales, and also debris related to the wound, freshen the advantages adn make it a bit bloody.

A soft tooth brush can be used, however whatever “scrubbing” textile or execute you use ought to dipped in hydrogen peroxide OFTEN while you’re rubbing – An-n-n-nnnd – you can’t put ANY genuine pressure on the wound.

I suggest, you have to place SOME tension on the tooth brush or bandage – however not enough to erode the meat below that. You can grow the wound hazardously if you tax the cleaning process, fish “meat” is rather soft in vivo as well as comes away instead quickly.

All at once (pretty much once you’re done debriding the wound) and also it’s fresh but blood-spattered looking – you ought to infuse the fish with an antibiotic like Baytril. Consider that fish 0.4 – 0.6 cc IP.

Undoubtedly if you have one more medicant like Azactam and you do NOT have Baytril, use the one you have according to application chart in guide.

For any kind of aid on the above topics (like cloves as well as treatment) please search out the posts on Koivet.com or see the book.

Switch out the fish in the pond. Watch for enhancement and consider re-injecting 3 days later on with Baytril.

Do NOT – I duplicate do NOT rescrub the injury until or unless we agree via electronic graphics that you should.

Total failing to respond with the development of a tight white ring around the injury, as well as a glossy pink facility, would recommend that this is in fact a cancer, which are usually generated by a mix of three factors:.

Genetic makeup (fish with white in the pattern and the Gosanke).

    Photodermatitis.

High nitrates as well as background air pollution like high DOC.

If it’s a skin cancer cells, excision could be attempted in that area due to the fact that there is a Great Deal Of area under that lesion which could allow margins for removal that the fish could easily live without.

Koi at the Portland Japanese Garden: Vote for your favorite photo

We received more than 1,000 garden photographs in the 2014 Homes & Gardens of the Northwest Garden Photo Contest. The top four winners will be announced online and in the Dec. 27 issue of Homes & Gardens.

The Oregonian staff photographers have also singled out 10 finalists for photographic merit.

Through Dec. 17, you will be able to view the finalists at www.oregonlive.com/hg-photo and vote for your favorite. The photo with the most votes will be deemed the People’s Choice winner and fifth place winner.

Here is another mini profile of one of the finalists:

Marc Sheridan of Vancouver submitted “A Flick of the Tail,” an image of koi at the Portland Japanese Garden.

What captivated you about this image?

My wife and I moved here from California in June and one of the first things we did was to visit the Japanese Garden in Portland. Coming upon the koi pond, I was captivated by the colors and the fast moving fish and the water lilies in bloom were an added bonus. I took more than one photograph but the last one I took of the koi tail seemed so indicative of the quiet serenity of the gardens.

How did you capture it (equipment, light, setting)?

This photograph was shot with a Nikon D7000 on a tripod using a Nikon 18-140mm lens, no flash and no artificial lighting, just daylight at 11:45 a.m. The aperture was f32 (so stopped down all the way) and the shutter was 1/3rd of a second (slow to create blur).

What is your occupation?  Does that benefit your photography skills and if so, how?

I am a graphic designer by trade, which definitely benefits me with composition and color.

When was the first time you took a photo? What have you learned since then?

The first photograph that I took was of an hibiscus flower in Northern California back in 2003 with Nikon’s first digital camera, a D100. Since then, I have learned a great deal about color, composition and the technical aspects of how to use a camera.

California’s coast offers plenty of treasures, but few are as steeped in history as the city of Monterey.

Where else could you see the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium and also explore Cannery Row, where John Steinbeck drew the inspiration for his iconic novel of the same name?

Today’s Cannery Row, with its hotels, shops and restaurants, bears little resemblance to the rough-and-tumble neighborhood that once dominated California’s sardine canning industry.

But there’s still plenty to see.

Harbor seals, sea otters and pelicans are frequent visitors to the area and the city also has a scenic recreation trail leading down to Fisherman’s Wharf and the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium contains more than 35,000 creatures with nearly 200 exhibits. The aquarium is a bit pricey at nearly $40 per adult, but the experience is well worth it. When you step up to the large aquarium windows, it feels like you’re right there among the sea creatures.

And the sanctuary is, well, really big.

As a federally protected marine area off California’s central coast, it runs from Marin to Cambria, encompassing 276 miles of shoreline. At its deepest point it plunges 12,713 feet — more than 2 miles down.

The sanctuary contains the nation’s largest kelp forests and one of North America’s largest underwater canyons.

But you don’t have to dive all the way down there for fun because there are plenty of things to do closer to the surface, like diving, kayaking, boating and surfing. You can also go fishing, whale watching, sailing or embark on a harbor cruise.

And when you leave the water, a great two-wheeled adventure awaits. The 29-mile Monterey Bay Coastal Bike Trail runs from Monterey north to Castroville. Along the way, you’ll pass by Fort Ord Dunes State Park with stunning views of the Pacific.

Sections of the trail run parallel to Highway 1, however, so pay close attention and stay in your lane.

All of this would be more than enough to draw anyone to this beautiful seaside community. But how about a world-class jazz festival?

A friend and I visited Monterey in September for the 58th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival. This year’s headliners included jazz legend Herbie Hancock, and Booker T. Jones, who rose to fame in the ’60s as the leader of Booker T. & the MG’s.

It was a great event with lots of other amazing musicians, including Davina & The Vagabonds, the Billy Childs Quartet and drummer Eric Harland. Some of those might not be household names, but I assure you they can play.

The people who live in Monterey swear by the place and say they wouldn’t be anywhere else.

“My wife and I moved up here probably 25 years ago and we love it,” a fellow cyclist said as my friend and I were cruising along the bike path. “It stays overcast a little too long sometimes but this is just a great area to live. And San Francisco isn’t that far away.”

The general manager of Chart House Seafood Restaurant, Ellen Marconi, described the town as “quaint, eclectic, historical and peaceful.

“We had the U.S. open here in 2010 and it was crazy busy, but people were blown away by how beautiful it is,” she said. “The coast is unspoiled and very majestic … and the people are genuinely kind here.”
