The first polar bear believed to be treated with chemotherapy in the United States died Wednesday at Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium from liver cancer, officials said Friday.
Glacier, 19, was diagnosed in February with advanced liver cancer, which spread to his lungs and abdominal lymph nodes. He also suffered from heart disease.
“Our entire zoo family is saddened by the loss of Glacier,” said Karen Goodrowe Beck, the zoo’s general curator. “He was a magnificent ambassador for his species, helping hundreds of thousands of zoo visitors to connect with polar bears and learn more about the perils they face in the wild.”
Glacier was one of three polar bears at Point Defiance. He came to Tacoma in 1997 with another bear, Blizzard, after the two were orphaned in Manitoba, Canada.
Boris, 29, also lives at the zoo in the Arctic Tundra area.
A routine exam in February uncovered Glacier’s mass and heart murmur.
Veterinarians worked most of the year with specialists in cardiology, radiology, oncology and surgery to devise a unique treatment plan for the polar bear’s cancer.
Oral and intravenous chemotherapy started in April with the help of Dr. Lisa Parshley from Olympia Veterinary Cancer Center.
“Glacier was extremely sick from two very bad diseases when we first diagnosed him,” zoo veterinarian Karen Wolf said. “He was not moving well, he was sleeping more, he wasn’t interacting with zookeepers and he was uncomfortable.”
She said the treatment improved his quality of life for the last eight months and allowed him to eat more, wander near the stream in his exhibit, participate in his training and swim in his saltwater pool.
A necropsy was performed Thursday. He died of complications from a large liver tumor, according to Point Defiance Zoo.
The record of his treatment likely will help with the future treatment of polar bears, and possibly other bears, Wolf said.
Glacier, who was 9 feet tall and weighed about 950 pounds, was not a geriatric bear. Life expectancy for a male polar bear in the wild is 20 years, according to the Association of Zoos & Aquariums.

Full disclosure: We were on a road trip and wouldn’t have gone to this very pricey aquarium if grandparents hadn’t paid for it. Cost aside though, it was an excellent aquarium. We were wowed most by the tank with the sea turtles and the hammerhead sharks. I actually gasped when I walked in. It’s pure theater, with the floor to ceiling glass and the darkened room. The sea otters were being fed and that was fun too. My son was impressed that out on the deck, the telescopes were free. Everywhere else we’ve been, they cost, and by the time we finally get focused on something interesting, they time is up and the telescope goes black. Here, we were able to find a couple of groups of sea otters out in the kelp beds and he was able to see them. We both enjoyed the artsy exhibit on how our plastic trash affects ocean life and just how much of it we create. One sour note though was that after going through that emotionally moving exhibit, we went over to the cafe and not only did they serve our drinks in plastic, but then there were no recycle bins! Wow, talk about a mixed message. I would think that, even though CA doesn’t seem big on recycling compared to Seattle, that this aquarium would set a better example. I plan to write to them. Don’t imagine it’ll do much good, but worth a try. We probably won’t go again because of the cost, but it was definitely worth it when someone else was paying.

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) — Four loggerhead turtle hatchlings will be on display before taking on a role in Virginia Aquarium & Marine Science Center’s conservation efforts.
The Virginian-Pilot reports that each year, the aquarium collects loggerhead hatchlings to study before releasing them into the ocean. This year’s four were plucked from among 81 at Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge on Aug. 29.
On Thursday, the aquarium’s Lori Semple moved the four from tanks in the quarantine area to the nursery, where visitors can see them through glass.
In 12 to 18 months, each will be fitted with a transmitter and released into the warm waters of the Gulf Stream off North Carolina. The aquarium will study where they go and what they do before they return to the beach to nest.

It is not often you can interact with sharks in the desert. But that is exactly what happened recently to one local school group.
The Ute Perkins Elementary School kindergarten and first grade classes got to experience sharks up close and personal on Wednesday, October 23, when they took a field trip to Mandalay Bay Shark Reef Aquarium.
This was an expensive field trip and normally out of the range of most classrooms, especially for younger kids. But Perkins kindergarten teacher Cheryl Sobrio really wanted her students to have this experience. So in August she entered them in a Mandalay Bay drawing for a free field trip. The date for the announcement of the winners came and went and Sobrio was disappointed because she didn’t get a call.
“I contacted Mandalay Bay in August and gave them all of our school information, but then I never heard from them so I assumed we did not win,” Sobrio said. “Then, about three weeks ago I got a call from the aquarium asking me if I was still interested!”
There had been a cancellation. So they offered the spot to Sobrio’s class.
But there was a catch. She still needed to raise $400 to pay for the bus to transport the students.
“I sent out a text to all the parents,” Sobrio said. “Within 20 minutes I had the money.”
That money came from generous donations from Nevada politicians. Someone had contacted Assemblyman James Oscarson who was more than happy to donate $200 towards the buses. A few minutes later Senator Pete Goicoechea also donated the other $200. And, just like that, the group was ready to go.
Sobrio explained that the kindergarten and first grade classes won’t actually study their unit on ocean life until March. But she was excited because of the huge opportunity this trip gave her kids.
“When we get to our ocean unit the kids will be able to reflect back on this trip and remember the hands on activities that they got to do,” she said.
The field trip had the kids engrossed in marine life from the moment they stepped off the bus., Sobrio said.
The aquarium staff started off the tour with a bang: immersing the kids in a rainforest setting complete with alligators, piranhas, and giant fish. The kids also got lessons about all the marine life they were viewing along the way.
The staff taught in an interactive way that included the students in the lessons. For example, when they were looking at the lizard exhibit, the staff had the kids help them locate the lizards by having a lizard hunt.
After the rainforest, the kids went to the ocean touch room where they got to actually touch rays, horseshoe crabs and other marine life.
From there they went on to what everyone was waiting for: the sharks. At first the kids looked at the sharks and sea turtles swimming over their heads and all around them in the shark tunnel and were thrilled. But then several divers entered the pool and began interacting with kids, making them laugh, showing them neat things, and posing for pictures with them.
“I loved the sharks!” said kindergartner Aidyn McClean, 5.
His classmate, Anthony Salvato, also 5, had a different favorite, though. “It was so awesome because I got to touch a stingray for the first time!” he said.
“I just really want to thank Assemblyman Oscarson and Senator Goicoechea and the staff of Mandalay Bay for being so kind,” Sobrio said. “I don’t know how many schools get to go in this program, but we were so lucky to be chosen.”

Following in the footsteps of Wizards teammate Kris Humphries, who purchased a luxury home on an episode of Bravo’s “Million Dollar Listing” last month, John Wall is appearing on a reality TV show.
Wall will be featured on Friday’s episode (10 p.m. ET) of Animal Planet’s “Tanked,” which you might not guess (unless you’ve seen the show before) is about celebrities getting hooked up with incredible, customized aquariums.
During the episode, Wall invites aquarium experts Wayde King and Brett Raymer into his home and brainstorms the perfect display for some exotic fish. After nixing a cutout in the wall of his personal basketball court — think of the children! — Wall guides King and Raymer to his Vegas-inspired game room. Wall confirms that he likes to go to Las Vegas. “For business,” he says.
The episode provides a good look at Wall’s “man cave,” including a hallway adorned with framed jerseys of Michael Jordan, Ryan Zimmerman and Anthony Davis, among others.
Wall shoots down King and Raymer’s idea to turn his card table into a tank and instead asks for a tank in the shape of a pair of dice.
The final product is a 250-gallon tank on top of a custom craps table with an acrylic shield. One has to imagine that even Gilbert Arenas would be impressed.

— Carving pumpkins is a Halloween pastime for many families across the U.S. On Friday, Oct. 30, a family of blacktip reef sharks joined in on the festivities.
Underwater pumpkin carving was just one of the events hosted at the National Aquarium in Baltimore as part of its annual “Hallowmarine” celebration. The two-day celebration, which began Friday, included a parade and educational opportunities for children, and encouraged guests to wear their Halloween costumes to the aquarium.
Josh Foronda, an assistant dive safety officer and aquarist at the aquarium, carved the pumpkin in the Blacktip Reef exhibit. The design was a jack-o-lantern wearing a scuba mask, and it entertained the reef’s animals as well as aquarium guests.
The animals “usually come over and explore,” said Foronda, who has carved pumpkins underwater at the aquarium for the past three years.
Throughout the carving, fish and sharks came by Foronda to inspect the pumpkin. Calpyso, a three-legged green sea turtle, took particular interest in the activity.
The pumpkin also serves as food for some of the exhibit’s vegetarian occupants, and as “additional habitat for some of the smaller animals,” Foronda added.
The pumpkin, which aquarium staff weight to the bottom of the reef, also serves as enrichment for the animals — something for them to play with and nudge — according to Colline Emmanuelle, a visitor programs interpretive specialist at the aquarium.
While fun, Hallowmarine festivities also strive to teach children and families about the roll “scary” animals like sharks play in marine ecosystems, Emmanuelle said.
“There’s actually a lot of animals that people often perceive as spooky or scary that are actually really important to the environment,” she said.
