4 newborn sharks welcomed to Auburn Hills aquarium

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. –

The SEA LIFE Michigan Aquarium in Auburn Hills welcomed four new sharks to its waters on Friday: Two white-spotted bamboo sharks and two brownbanded bamboo sharks. All four sharks are females between two and three feet long.

They were born at SEA LIFE Minnesota Aquarium as part of the company’s worldwide Breed Rescue Protect conservation program.

“Guests will definitely be able to spot these new creatures easily since bamboo sharks, unlike the other breeds at SEA LIFE Michigan, are bottom dwellers,” said SEA LIFE Michigan Curator Kelli Cadenas. “They’ve settled in nicely in our Sting Ray Bay exhibit where they can be found nestled in around the corals and rock.”

In the wild, bamboo sharks are listed as near threatened on the World Conservation Unit Red List due to overfishing by humans. The sharks produce eggs that develop and hatch outside of the body.

The Atlantic stingrays currently in the aquarium’s harbor exhibit will also be moving into Sting Ray Bay.

“As our creatures grow, and new ones are brought in, we are always assessing the best possible environments for each one as their health and well-being are our number one priority,” Cadenas said.
