Dear Edhatters: At 11am Saturday morning my friend took interest in a bird being mobbed by crows. It turns out the predatory bird perched atop a neighbor’s casuarina tree was an osprey (a.k.a. “Fish eagle” or “Fish hawk”). The photo taken and shown here is poorly done, but you can see the white breast of the osprey.

I thought this photographic evidence and news of this enterprising predator might be of interest to any and all in my neighborhood who have koi ponds, as the osprey was perched atop the tree whilst dining on a brightly-colored orange koi. This tree is located on the Upper East Side, near the top of Islay Street and Prospect Avenue. Koi owners may want to take necessary precautions. (There aren’t any koi surviving in the pond at Alice Keck Park Memorial Gardens now, correct?)
