Members of the public are being given an opportunity to take home a piece of unique Westcountry art – and support valuable scientific research in the process.

The Making Waves auction will see 15 colourful sunfish sculptures which have been on display in Plymouth put up for sale in order to raise funds for marine conservation programmes.

Now a familiar sight, the fish were first introduced to Plymouth back in March to highlight the skills and talents that exist within the city and raise awareness of conservation issues.

Each of the statues was designed by local apprentices, sponsored by local businesses and individually decorated by local artists, students and graduates.

The Making Waves event, hosted by the National Marine Aquarium, will see 14 of the sunfish go up for auction, while a 15th – sponsored by the aquarium itself – will be up for grabs in a raffle.

All money raised from the auction will go towards marine conservation schemes, including the aquarium’s own Ocean Sunfish project.

Dr. David Gibson, Managing Director at the National Marine Aquarium, said the organisation was delighted to be hosting the auction.

“We hope the people of Plymouth will get involved in the auction and help us to achieve our continued ambition of driving marine conservation through engagement,” he said.

“The sunfish statues have been a welcome addition to the city over the last few months – although we’ll be sad to see them go, we’re thrilled the funds raised will be used to support marine conservation projects

“We are very grateful to the businesses, designers and teams of apprentices who have helped make this project such a success – and the local residents and visitors to Plymouth who have enjoyed the trail over the last few months.”

The auction will take place on September 18th. Tickets for the event will cost £25, which includes entry into the sunfish raffle.
