Tess Danelesko from the BC Cetacean Sightings Network and Carla Crossman from the Vancouver Aquarium Wild Killer Whale Adoption Program will be joining the Discovery Passage Aquarium for two special events this Friday.
Starting at 2 p.m., Carla and Tess will have their display tent and props in action, and will talk with the kids of all ages about the amazing diversity of marine mammal species that inhabit our waters.
How big is a killer whale? What is a porpoise? How do whales eat? Come and learn about the dolphins, whales and porpoises that live off our coast, and what you can do to help!
This event is free.
The, starting at 7 p.m., there’s a double-bill presentation in the Thulin Room of the Maritime Heritage Centre.
The evening begins by bringing you up to speed with the sea star wasting syndrome that has hit local waters hard in the last month.
Sandra Milligan from North Island College and Deb Cowper from the Discovery Passage Aquarium will present general information on the situation that is wiping out many species of sea stars along the Pacific coast.
They will outline local and regional research efforts, and how you can become involved to help track the spread of wasting syndrome for the scientists.
The Vancouver Aquarium representatives, Carla and Tess, will talk about the initiatives and research on wasting syndrome happening there. Then they will switch gears and engage us with highlights from recent and current research marine mammal projects including the elusive hybrid porpoises, the amazing echolocation ability of dolphins, secrets to species identification, and more!
