Happy birthday to you, Skinny, 40, harbor seal at Oregon Coast Aquarium

Skinny will get top billing Monday at the Oregon Coast Aquarium in Newport.

And why shouldn’t she. It’s not very often that a harbor seal reaches the age of 40 and Monday, June 1, is the celebration of her birthday.

Skinny is the oldest harbor seal in the Northwest, and the third oldest in the United States, according to the Association of Zoos and Aquariums, which keeps track of such things for accredited members. The average lifespan of female harbor seals is 25 to 30 years.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium will celebrate its golden girl with a birthday party June 1 in seal style. Fish filled ice cakes and piles of ice cubes to munch and lounge on will be on the menu. Entertainment will include enrichment activities like Kong toys stuffed with fishy snacks.

Skinny has been a part of the Oregon Coast Aquarium family from the beginning. She was found starving and orphaned as a pup on a beach in Everett, Wash., on June 1, 1975. She was deemed non-releasable and moved to a long term home at the Point Defiance Zoo & Aquarium in Tacoma. She later moved with a few of her exhibit mates to Newport just before the Aquarium opened in May 1992.

In her prime, Skinny was the dominant harbor seal in the Aquarium’s exhibit. She would often try to swipe fish other seals dropped, especially if it was her favorite food – herring.

She lost interest in maintaining the top spot when she started to lose her sight. The Aquarium’s mammalogists noticed the change, and trained her to respond to tactile, rather than the visual cues.

Despite her loss of eyesight, Skinny continues to learn new behaviors. Her most recent achievement is a high energy exercise oriented activity called a “tail walk.” When cued, Skinny will pop vertically out of the water to her middle, and then use her tail to waddle backwards in that upright position.

Aquarium visitors that wish to spot Skinny in the Pinniped Exhibit should look for her silver coat speckled with black spots and her surprised expression. “The easiest way to spot her is by her big eyes and how she holds her whiskers forward to help her feel her way around the exhibit,” said Brittany Blades, a mammalogist at the Aquarium, in a statement released by the Aquarium.

The Oregon Coast Aquarium is dedicated to the highest quality aquatic and marine science programs for recreation and education so that the public better understands, cherishes, and conserves the world’s natural marine and coastal resources. An accredited Association of Zoos & Aquariums institution, the non-profit organization is ranked as one of the top 10 aquariums in the United States. The address is 2820 S.E. Ferry Slip Rd., South Beach, Newport, Oregon; aquarium.org, 541-867-3474.

Aquarium dolphin survives groundbreaking surgery

Not that long ago, Hana would have been, as they say, put down.

But instead of euthanasia, the Vancouver Aquarium Pacific white-sided dolphin got emergency and groundbreaking bowel surgery that began Thursday night and wrapped up Friday just prior to midday.

The 21-year-old female pulled through, but was weak as of Friday afternoon and on round-the-clock medical watch.

“What we have is a very sick dolphin,” Dr. Martin Haulena, head veterinarian at the Vancouver Aquarium, said after surgery was complete. “What we did was quite radical and new.”

It was the first time general anesthesia had been performed on a Pacific white-sided dolphin and the first bowel surgery ever performed on a dolphin, whale or porpoise.

Because they live in water, every breath a cetacean takes is a conscious decision, which made the surgery extra risky. Hana was hooked up to a mechanical respirator.

One of two remaining Pacific white-sided dolphins at the aquarium, she was fine last Sunday, but Monday when staff arrived she was listless and wouldn’t eat.

“Hana never had a sick day in her life,” Haulena said. “She’s never been off her food, she’s never not wanted to interact with people.”

Blood tests indicated some internal inflammation, but nothing yet serious, he said.

But by Wednesday she was severely sick with what turned out to be a life-threatening gastro-intestinal disorder.

Calls for help went out and leading specialists — a surgeon, anesthetist and radiologist — were flown in from as far away as Florida, Colorado and San Diego.

Local hospitals and pharmacies, meanwhile, pitched in with medical supplies and equipment.

With Hana rapidly deteriorating, according to ultra-sound and X-ray readings, the decision to perform a risky operation was made Thursday evening.

Seven vets were involved in a medical team that counted 40 people.

“We flew in the top-notch people in the world,” Haulena said. “It was a dream team.”

Haulena wasn’t sure what caused Hana’s sudden and rapid decline, but speculated some sort of bacteria may have taken advantage of a weakened state caused by some sort of pathogen.

A Pacific white-sided dolphin has been recorded living to 37 in captivity. Haulena estimated Hana to be in late middle age.

Hana was one of three Pacific white-sided dolphins rescued from a Japanese fishing net in 1991 and delivered to Vancouver in 2005 once Japanese officials deemed them unreleasable.

Spinnaker, a male, died three years ago at an estimated age of 25.

The third one is a healthy 27-year-old female named Helen.

“I’m as convinced as I always have been that if you are a sick marine mammal, this is where you want to be sick,” Haulena said.

Hana remained weak and unresponsive on Friday afternoon and was under “very intensive care,” the vet added.

He listed her condition as “hour-to-hour.”

“At the end of the day, an animal we care about is in very rough shape,” he said.

“I’m worried about her.”

Aquarium reminds boaters to keep their distance after whales spotted in Nanaimo

B.C. Cetacean Sightings Network

The Vancouver Aquarium is asking boaters to keep a healthy distance from whales and other sea life.

The reminder comes after killer whales were spotted in the Nanaimo area ahead of the Victoria Day long weekend.

The aquarium’s B.C. Cetacean Sightings Network says the sighting serves as a reminder of how boating can impact whales.

“For many, the May long weekend represents the start of the boating season,” saidBCCSN coordinator Tessa Danelesko in a release.

Global News

“It’s also a time when many species of whales, dolphins, and porpoises are seen off the B.C. coast, giving many boaters the opportunity to have incredible marine wildlife encounters. Unfortunately, when we get too close, approach too quickly, or make too much noise, we may disrupt the whales and interfere with foraging, resting and socializing. Boats can also directly injure cetaceans through collisions.”

The society offers these tips to help keep cetaceans safe:

-Be cautious and courteous: approach areas of known or suspected marine wildlife activity with extreme caution. Look in all directions before planning your approach or departure
-Slow down: reduce speed to less than 7 knots when within 400 metres/yards of the nearest whale. Avoid abrupt course changes
-Keep clear of the whales’ path: if whales are approaching you, cautiously move out of the way
-Do not approach whales from the front or from behind: always approach and depart whales from the side, moving in a direction parallel to the direction of the whales
-Do not approach or position your vessel closer than 100 metres/yards to any whale
-Place engine in neutral and allow whales to pass if your vessel is not in compliance with the 100 metres/yards approach guideline
-Stay on the offshore side of the whales when they are traveling close to shore
-Limit your viewing time to a recommended maximum of 30 minutes. This will minimize the cumulative impact of many vessels and will give consideration to other viewers
-Do not swim with, touch or feed marine wildlife

Former Maine Aquarium owner sues lawyer for rebuild role

BIDDEFORD, Maine (AP) — The old owner of a once-beloved aquarium in Maine is suing his former attorney with a claim that the lawyer intentionally mishandled a bankruptcy case stemming from an attempt to resurrect the facility.

Former Maine Aquarium owner Raymond Cronkite hoped to reopen the long-shuttered facility in Biddeford before seeking Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in 2009. He owned the original Maine Aquarium in Saco, which in its heyday was a popular attraction for locals and vacationing families, from 1984 to 1997.

Cronkite’s lawsuit alleges that Portland attorney James Molleur intentionally damaged his prospects for reorganization by misrepresenting his assets and letting the former mill building Cronkite had been rehabbing go to a group of investors at auction.

“Maine residents were denied a great opportunity to resume their patronage of what would have been an even bigger and better Maine Aquarium than the one they already enjoyed for over 12 years,” wrote Cronkite, who is representing himself, in the lawsuit.

Molleur’s attorney, Jim Bowie, of Portland, said Molleur and his firm deny the allegations and believe Cronkite’s bankruptcy case was properly resolved.

Bowie said he and Molleur expect the lawsuit to be dismissed swiftly. He added that Molleur’s firm hasn’t had any involvement with Cronkite since 2009.

“We will be filing the appropriate motions to resolve the case in due course,” Bowie said.

The original Maine Aquarium was on 70 acres of land on Route 1 in Saco. It housed exhibits with seals, sharks, penguins and the fish of Maine’s lakes until its foreclosure. The animals were transferred to other aquariums, Cronkite said.

Cronkite hoped to revive the aquarium in a former mill building in Biddeford with a research center and educational tour boats running on the Saco River. The aquarium would have been in Biddeford’s revitalizing downtown, where other faded mills have been repurposed.

One of Cronkite’s claims is that Molleur knowingly made it look like Cronkite’s assets — chiefly the mill — were worth much less than their actual value.

Cronkite said his assets were at least $3 million, but Molleur told the court they were less than $50,000, the lawsuit states. The lawsuit accuses Molleur of “sitting like a potted plant” when he could have objected to a judge’s order that let the property go to auction, where investors bought it for a fraction of its worth.

Cronkite is asking for a jury trial and monetary damages. The case is currently in the discovery phase, which ends Oct. 10. A spokeswoman for York County Superior Court in Alfred said the case could be scheduled for a hearing after that.

Biddeford Mayor Alan Casavant said the plan to reopen the aquarium, which would have been along a major rail line, would have been a boon to the city, and the project’s failure was a disappointment.

“Conceptually, looking at the designs, they were beautiful designs,” he said. “I know he sunk a lot of money into it and invested a lot of time into the design. I am disappointed that it never came to fruition.”

EXCLUSIVE: 2 former Waikiki Aquarium directors say facility is mismanaged

WAIKIKI (HawaiiNewsNow) –

Two former directors of the Waikiki Aquarium told Hawaii News Now it suffers from dysfunctional management that has led to rapid turnover in key positions and may have resulted in some of its animals dying recently, a charge the current man in charge denied.

Founded in 1904, the facility is the second-oldest public aquarium in the country, well-known for its Hawaiian monk seals, colorful fish and corals.

Leighton Taylor, director of the Waikiki Aquarium from 1975 to 1985, said, “We’re really concerned that that place is going under.”

Bruce Carlson, who was in charge of the aquarium from 1985 to 2002, described the situation there as “a sad state of affairs.”

Current Waikiki Aquarium Executive Director Andy Rossiter, who’s headed the aquarium since 2004, responded to their criticisms.

“All of our staff here are fully committed to the health and well being of the animals. Will it go under? Not if I can help it,” Rossiter told Hawaii News Now Tuesday.

About six weeks ago, two of the aquarium’s giant clams — one of them the oldest in captivity for 33 years — died mysteriously just days apart. Only one giant clam remains alive there.

Rossiter said an independent lab found no parasites or toxins and could not determine why the clams died.

“Nothing else in the tank was affected, so it presumably wasn’t water quality either,” Rossiter said. “So the corals in the tank are fine, the fish are fine. It was just those two clams. Bizarre.”

Carlson, who brought one of the clams that died to the aquarium in 1982 when it was just a half-inch in length, said, “As we predicted, some significant animals have died.”

A little more than a year ago, three rare leafy sea dragons from Australia also died at the aquarium. Rossiter said the aquarium was unable to determine why those creatures died, but they are very fragile animals.

Taylor described the aquarium as “kind of neglected, ignored, misled and animals are dying there.”

Rossiter said the deaths of those five creatures must be kept in perspective.

“Five animals, three of which are notoriously difficult to keep alive, dying out of a collection of 1,800. Obviously, it’s sad, it’s unfortunate, but it’s not a matter of huge concern, because the staff we have here are very well trained, and animals die. It’s a fact of life things die,” Rossiter said.

In fact, another giant clam died at the aquarium when Carlson was curator of exhibits back in 1982, Rossiter said.

Carlson and Taylor attribute the recent animal deaths to staff turnover under Rossiter. During his 11 years at the helm, two men filled the animal curator post for about one year each before being fired. The most recent was terminated about four months ago. Otherwise, the aquarium has relied on employees to fill-in as acting curators for most of the last decade.

“Each of them was terminated in relatively short order. That’s shocking,” Carlson said, noting he fired just one person in 15 years as director. “They’ve been without a curator more often in the last decade than they’ve had a curator. And that’s a big red flag right away,” Carlson said, since the curator is responsible for overseeing the safety of the animals and staff.

A third man who was hired as associate director and education director in 2011 was on the job just six months before being fired, sources said.

Two of the fired employees declined to speak to Hawaii News Now and the third did not reply to an email seeking comment.

“We’ve made some unfortunate hiring decisions and we’ve had to act upon them to rectify them,” said Rossiter.

Rossiter said personnel rules requiring confidentiality forbid him from going into detail about reasons for the dismissals of employees.

“The acting curators have all been internal people that I would have hoped to have groomed to have taken over the curator role,” Rossiter said. But Carlson and Taylor said none of those acting curators has been given the chance to have the job permanently, contributing to instability at the facility.

Carlson said other staffers have been fired or quit because they were unhappy, leaving for other jobs in the UH system or elsewhere.

One top UH administrator familiar with the situation who requested anonymity said Rossiter is a “nice guy” but he’s a “disaster as a manager.”

But Rossiter claimed two grievances filed against him by union employees alleging a hostile work environment in recent years were not sustained.

The permanent education director’s position is vacant, as are nine of 38 positions at the aquarium, Rossiter said. He said because of budget cuts, if he filled those remaining vacancies, the aquarium would “go bankrupt.”

The aquarium’s student help program is being phased out in a cost cutting move, Rossiter said. The program offers part-time employment and training to UH students. Carlson started work in the program when he was a graduate student, long before he was hired to head the aquarium.

The program had as many as 20 student employees at its height, Rossiter said, but now only about 12 remain and they are not being replaced once they graduate from the university. He said two volunteers are being trained to replace each of the part-time student employees as their terms come to an end. But none of the current student workers are losing their jobs, he said.

He said about 20 percent of the aquarium’s $3 million annual budget comes from state taxpayers, while the rest of its operating funds come from admission fees, donations and programs. Even though the aquarium is administratively attached to UH, no tuition money or UH funds are used to fund operations, Rossiter said.

Carlson said he and Taylor have “tried unsuccessfully to get answers to our concerns through direct conversations” with Rossiter. And they also met with other UH officials, including UH President David Lassner, “but to little effect.”

The two former directors said they reluctantly contacted Hawaii News Now with their concerns after feeling they were rebuffed by the university.

In 2005, Rossiter and UH officials decided to let the aquarium’s national accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums lapse.

Carlson said the UH needs to seek accreditation once again because that would force an objective look at overall operations, from management and finances to animal care, staffing, education programs and research.

“Really the aquarium should have a comprehensive review by an independent, outside organization,” Carlson said.

But Rossiter insisted accreditation is more trouble than it’s worth and he said UH already conducts inspections to assure animal safety there.

“The main benefit of AZA accreditation is to take care, oversee the health and the well being of the animals and to be quite frank, we have that here in abundance at the university,” Rossiter said.

He said AZA accreditation would also cost the aquarium about $124,000 a year in admission fee losses, equal to about three months of electricity bills. Rossiter said that’s because people who are members of the Honolulu Zoo Society could have reciprocal free admission to the aquarium, since the zoo would be a sister AZA-accredited organization.

Asked if the public should be concerned about management at the aquarium, Rossiter said, “Absolutely not. They’re welcome to come down and check out the aquarium. I respectfully suggest it’s looking as good now as it has in its 111-year history.”

Hundreds help transfer Belle Isle Aquarium's koi fish to outdoor pond

DETROIT, MI- Hundreds of volunteers turned out on a sunny Saturday morning to help transfer the Belle Isle Aquarium’s koi fish to the outdoor pond.

292 fish were transferred from their indoor winter habitat using buckets to the pond in front of the aquarium.

Moe, the largest and oldest koi at the aquarium, is about 80 years old. Large plastic storage containers are used to transfer the larger fish.

The koi transfer event was the largest it has ever been according to Belle Isle Conservancy Board Member Vance Patrick who estimated crowds easily over 500.

The bi-annual koi transfer started 8-9 years ago, which used to be done by a handful of volunteers. Now the community is heavily involved in the unique event expanding each year.

Aside from carrying the fish to their summer home a troupe of acrobatic performers, the Lovely Lyra Ladies, showed off their aerial skills to the crowd.

Blaze and Ember, of Warren’s Breakout, juggled and performed hula hooping acts for the kids who could try their hands at the either actives.

Hot dogs and snacks were provided as many families enjoyed lunch under one of the cherry blossom trees around the conservancy.

Hundreds of families roamed around the aquarium inside the lush green rooms of the Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory and around the gardens surrounding the Belle Isle treasure.

The Belle Isle Aquarium It is open Saturdays & Sundays, 10 am to 4 pm. Free admission and parking.

The Anna Scripps Whitcomb Conservatory is open Wednesday through Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free admission.
