American Aquarium at The Wax


American Aquarium was recently named one of Rolling Stone’s 10 need-to-know country artists, and they’re playing at The Wax Friday 7:30 p.m.


The group’s songs are full of lyrics dealing with lost love and coming to grips with the chances of a broken heart with every new relationship.



American Aquarium will perform 8 p.m. Friday, Deb. 27 at the Jackson Symphony Orchestra’s Weatherwax Hall, at 215 W. Michigan Ave. 

The North Carolina-based group released their sixth album “Wolves” on Feb. 3, which was entirely fan-funded. The group raised more than $20,000 through the PledgeMusic website with the help of close to 1,200 donors.


Tickets are $15 through jacksonsymphony.org in advance and $18 at the door.


Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Refreshments, including a cash bar, will be available.

Shakespeare’s Macbeth at the Wharton Center’s Fairchild Theatre


Michigan State University’s Department of Theatre will tackle William Shakespeare’s 15th-century classic tragedy “Macbeth” at the Wharton Center’s Fairchild Theatre, which is part of its “Power Plays” season.


Macbeth has showings scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Thursday, 8 p.m. Friday, 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. 


In addition to being Shakespeare’s shortest tragedy, the Scottish tale is also one of the playwright’s most well-known and powerful. The play directed by Ann Folino White examines, power, politics, blood and witches. General admission tickets cost $15.

Jackson College Winter Film Series featuring Spike Lee’s “Do the Right Thing”


Jackson College’s 39th annual Winter Film Series is picking up steam with Spike Lee’s classic film “Do the Right Thing.”


Lee was nominated for an Academy Award in 1990 for Best Writing for the story that looks at the hottest day of the year in Brooklyn when everyone’s hate builds and explodes into violence


This series is of part of the college’s English 210 Introduction to Film class, but the community is welcome to join the students.

Two Small Pieces of Glass at the Peter F. Hurst Planetarium


Join the Peter F. Hurst Planetarium Thursday or Friday for a look at how the telescope has helped put the Universe into perspective.


“Two Small Pieces of Glass” looks at two teenage students talking with a female astronomer who enlightens them on the history of the telescope and discoveries made possible by its creation.


The discoveries of Galileo, Huygens, Newton, Hubble and many others are explored during this 40-minute show. The Hurst Planetarium, at 3328 Oakwood Drive, will air the show starting at 7 p.m.


A brief tour of the night sky will follow, which costs $5 for adults, $4 for seniors $3 for students to attend.

Beer and Hymns at 127 Brewing Company


Jackson’s First Presbyterian Church and 127 Brewing Company are teaming up for a night hymn singing while tipping back some locally crafted beer.


This free event pairing hymns and beer is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday at 3090 Shirley Drive in Jackson.


The brewing company doesn’t serve food, but patrons are more than welcome to bring finger foods, snacks or desserts to share.
